Akshay Kumar on Potentially Making 2,000 Crore With Upcoming Movies: “Nothing Is Bankable” | Bollywood
Newly released from the Sooryavanshi hit, Akshay Kumar is one of Bollywood’s busiest stars with at least eight films and a web series in the works. His projects for the coming year are expected to bring in around ??2000 crore collectively, from the sale of movie, streaming and satellite rights.
Asked about his views on the projected figure, Akshay said the Covid-19 pandemic had taught him that “nothing is bankable”.
In an interview with Variety, Akshay was briefed on business estimates setting the revenue for his projects in 2022 at around ??2000 crores. “Wow, you did your math faster than me!” I’m very proud of this kind of showing and I think it is a testament to the fact that genres, stories and characters are still king, ”he said.
“While I’m excited for what should be an amazing 2022, I think if the past two years have taught us anything, it’s that nothing is bankable. Let’s see how the cookie crumbles and maybe we can have the same discussion of the box office numbers around this time next year? ” he added.
Akshay delivered the biggest blockbuster of the year with Sooryavanshi, who won around ??200 crore in India, although theaters do not operate at full capacity in some states including Maharashtra.
Currently, Akshay is preparing for the release of Atrangi Re by Aanand L Rai, starring Sara Ali Khan and Dhanush. The film is slated for release digitally on Disney + Hotstar on December 24.
