ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – Back by popular demand, FilmOneFest is hosting its 3rd Annual 24-hour virtual film slam. This year, filmmakers will have 24 hours from 7 p.m. Friday, June 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 5 to make a one-minute film using a prop, location, and line of dialogue. Then, on June 12anda screening will take place in person at the Atlantic Highlands Arts Council Gallery, 54 1st Ave, Atlantic Highlands, NJ 07716. A simulcast will be featured on our social media platforms.

This is the eighth Film Slam event in seven years, and the third is taking place virtually. “With the virtual concept, you’re watching the event live with people from all over the world. It’s really exciting,” said Corinna Thuss, Director of FilmOneFest. The free event will be judged by FilmOneFest judges.

On the evening of June 4, filmmakers will receive the three criteria via a social media announcement and email. Filmmakers then only have 24 hours to conceptualize, film, score, edit and upload their films to submit to the competition. Winners receive laurels and bragging rights, as well as recognition on our social media platforms.

Films are judged by our FilmOneFest judges based on the creative inclusion of the assignment elements. The People’s Choice Award will be selected using a social media poll on June 12.

The virtual event was the brainchild of volunteer social media coordinator Gina Melnyk after the pandemic made the live event usually held on the Monmouth University campus banned in 2020. “We have got a lot of great feedback, so even when we could get back to meeting in person, we thought, let’s stick with virtual submissions. But Melnyk added that audiences missed the thrill of seeing their work on the big screen, so FilmOneFest is hosting the screening at the Gallery the following week.

Thuss pointed out that having a live audience in one place is always one of the best features of FilmOneFest events. “It’s great to start watching movies together again,” she said. However, we will continue to use technology to be together and celebrate the importance of art – and short films in particular – to lift our spirits and share our stories.

The Film Slam screening will be available in its entirety on Facebook and the FilmOneFest YouTube channel.

The annual FilmOneFest film festival celebrates super short films under two minutes. The event takes place in the Atlantic Highlands Marina on the third Saturday in July. This free and family event will take place on July 16, 2022 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. under the stars. Attendees can stroll among vendors, listen to bands, and dine at local food trucks. The rainy date will be the next day, July 17and the same time. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to learn about upcoming events.
