Jurassic World Dominion Claws Past Doctor Strange 2 as Second Greatest Movie of 2022
The big lingering question at this point is whether “Dominion” still has enough juice in the tank to cross the billion-dollar mark. As mentioned, the US won’t be much help at this point as the film has already been on VOD for weeks and the Blu-ray release will eat away even more at what may be left in the domestic market. But some kind of re-release with additional footage seems like a good idea, and it might once again delight moviegoers. It is therefore up to the international markets to obtain from Universal the lion’s share of the additional $40 million needed to overcome this difficulty.
Even if that doesn’t happen, that probably means we’ll get more “Jurassic” movies at this point. The “Jurassic World” trilogy was a stunning success, with the three films grossing $3.93 billion against $550 million in combined budgets. Universal has kept the sequels well below the $200 million threshold that so many big blockbusters reach budget-wise these days, and that’s a bargain. Producer Frank Marshall has already said more movies are on the way, and with “Dominion” doing so well, even against poor reviews, he’d be wise to believe so.
