Red Notice review – But why Tho? A community of geeks

Red Notice is a Netflix Original film written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. FBI Agent John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) helps Interpol apprehend notorious art thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds), who is on the hunt for three golden eggs given to Queen Cleopatra. However, Hartley is flanked by the notorious art thief known as “The Bishop” (Gal Gadot), who plants evidence suggesting he stole one of the eggs. Incarcerated in the same Russian prison, Hartley and Booth join forces to find the two remaining eggs and apprehend the Bishop with Interpol Inspector Das (Ritu Arya) on their heels.

Netflix touted Red Notice as one of his greatest film productions of all time, with the streamer apparently investing $ 200 million in the budget after acquiring the distribution rights from Universal Pictures. And it shows, especially when it comes to the action sequences. Thurber, who previously directed the Johnson-directed films Skyscraper and Central intelligence, makes sure the movie moves at a rate that seems faster than its two-hour runtime; it jumps from Italy to Russia to Spain and frames a centerpiece around each location. A key example occurs at the start of the film when Hartley pursues Booth in a museum in France; Reynolds uses his supple physique and the environment to stay one step ahead of Johnson, who is essentially a bull in a very expensive china shop as he crashes through windows and even gets pinned in a doorway of security. Other highlights include a fight in a crime lord’s trophy room and a narrow escape from a bullfighting arena.

Less impressive is Thurber’s script, which like Amazon Prime’s The war of tomorrow often looks like a collection of items from other better movies. An innocent man on the run and trying to get his name cleared? Shades of The fugitive. A team between two men at the antipodes, but who develop an unlikely friendship? Deadly weapon, Men in black… The list goes on. In perhaps the greatest example, when Booth and Hartley enter an underground bunker filled with treasure in the third act of the film, Booth begins to whistle the Indiana Jones theme. It was obviously intended to make the audience laugh; I found myself wanting to watch The Raiders of the Lost Ark instead of.

And the biggest problem is the three tracks; not only is there not a drop of chemistry between the trio, but their performances are more or less recycled across various performances throughout their careers. Reynolds is the worst; his sarcastic motormouth performance as Booth is slim after seeing him in dead Pool (and The bodyguard of the hitman, and Detective Pikachu, To infinity). It is extremely disappointing because free guy shows Reynolds is capable of more, and I wish he would push himself more when it comes to new roles. I also suspect that the world may have overestimated Gadot’s range outside of the Wonder woman movie theater; yes, she is extremely attractive and yes her accent is hypnotic but her performance is flatter than soda at room temperature. Johnson’s performance is a mixed bag; while he’s played several action heroes before, his perspective as Booth has a slightly more cerebral advantage as he’s able to read people based on their actions. But while Johnson easily plays the straight man with Reynolds, attempts at sexual tension with Gadot are laughable. Concrete example ; a dance sequence between Gadot and Johnson, which should be bubbling with passion, has all the energy of a poorly performed puppet show.

It’s a shame because this movie sounded much better on paper. Three of Hollywood’s biggest stars, a huge budget, and a streaming service ready to embrace creative freedom should be a filmmaker’s heaven. But that essential spark of chemistry is missing and it’s a blow because seeing actors working with each other is half of a movie’s draw. Netflix seems to oscillate between movies like The more they fall, which leaned on its western roots and had a cast that bounced perfectly on top of each other, and this; there is no in-between.

Red Notice may be the biggest movie Netflix has ever backed, but its blockbuster budgets and intense action sequences can’t cover the lack of chemistry between its stars or the influence of other films on its storyline. I hope Netflix keeps in mind that big budgets can only get you so far; the characters and the actors who play them are the cornerstone of a film.

Red Notice is currently showing in select theaters and will be available to stream on Netflix on November 12, 2021.
