Last week: College athletics made the headlines: The American Athletic Conference is growing with the FAU joining the USF, Navy, Temple and others. FAU continues to grow and progress with a group of excellent academic institutions. Why a conference realignment? Universities are looking for excellent conference partners, where sports matches generate interest and help create a great student experience while attracting high attendance and ticket sales; they also generate income through TV and media rights. Schools simultaneously pursue excellence in unpaid sports. The best conference alignments also find commonalities between academic programs, so that research, education, economic development, and athletic competition weave together and support common academic goals.
Looking forward: A modest proposal to improve the budget process and increase transparency and start rebuilding confidence in Washington: demanding that the elements of every budget proposal, every spending and tax program be fully developed, drafted, discussed and debated individually at the House and Senate floors. No “general framework” with details to be completed later. With this proposal, citizens across the country have a small chance to understand which tax programs and spending plans their representatives are voting for, rather than just hearing buzzwords and political slogans.
